The Classic gets comfortable: The Buzzraw X

The Legacy of Coast Cycles.

The cult of the Buzzraw was spreading fast, urban customers were getting it and getting in on it; it cut a dash through city streets, and none more fashion forward or culturally conscious than the boulevards of Paris. But Paris had a few ideas to test its new 2 wheeled resident.

The Buzzraw Classic seemed the ideal weapon to tackle urban Paris. Its bold and authoritative handling on squat wheels and comfortable lounge seat could tame the varied cityscape almost dismissively. At a Buzzraw collaboration event with Colette- the storied retailer of cutting edge street fashion- a few months after the bike was launched, Jansen took some time out for extended ride on the Buzzraw to experience an urban journey through Paris first-hand.

The journey was one to look forward to- fresh product, new city; but it was also to be an unexpectedly revealing one- encountering the first cobbled section of road with takeaway coffee in hand, Jansen and Buzzraw both found themselves rattled to the point of bemusement and also to the point of coffee splashing out through the cover. This was, as you would imagine, not a good look and gave pause for thought.

The Classic Makes its way to Europe to get a bit culture.

The thing is, there are few things in the world as harsh as the high frequency bumps of a cobbled street, it's just the way they are, unforgiving in any vehicle, large or small; and admittedly, the Buzzraw at inception, was born for urban tarmac, green lanes, concrete underpasses, the park, the beach; all relatively even surfaces, with the minor scars of the landscape to be deftly handled by the cushioning volume of its chunky tyres. But the Buzzraw Classic found an unexpected foe in the city that it was now calling home and quick passage over cobbled streets and the firm, plump tyres of the bike conspired to make the Buzzraw Classic ride just a little (too) ragged at e-bike speeds.

Buzzraw X | Full suspension for full comfort

The Classic was the ideal weapon to tackle urban Paris.

In the eyes of the Coast Cycles team, the decision was automatic- work on the full suspension Buzzraw X was decided on the spot- It had to bring a measure of compliance, comfort and stability to the the Buzzraw recipe.

The fully suspended Buzzraw X was a natural extension to the family, but to be frank, there were other thoughts that came into play too. How do you evolve a pioneering product? And more pressingly, the competition, who were now sprouting globally with lookalike products meant that Coast Cycles needed a play to stay ahead; it’s fun being sat at the front for a bit, but the world moves fast, and in a connected world, the competition moves even faster- no time for resting on laurels. Engineering a new platform was going to be costly, but why not? It was there to be done.

A manic 18 months, and lots of late nights later, the Buzzraw X made its debut at Taipei Cycle in 2018 and we not only collected a Taipei Cycle Gold design award for it, but got coverage from some of the most influential cycle related news channels to boot. We were pleased as punch, and our customers all seemed quick to embrace this new addition to the Buzzraw family, with even some existing ones coming back to upgrade to the X from their Classics.

Buzzraw X | The Unconventional Commuter E-bike

Let’s change pace for bit now and do a dive into some of the technical decisions of the the rear suspension for the Buzzraw X.

On the rear suspension architecture we looked at a pool of rear suspension geometry types, but the one thing that we’re not ashamed to admit is that we needed to get the look right - we wanted it to keep a family feel with the rest of the Buzzraw line, and that kept pointing to a Unified Rear Triangle design, or URT for short, as it retained the look of the rear triangle of the Buzzraw Classic- that continuous sweep of the frame tubing from the seat stay to the chain stay. Happily this decision also fell inline with other principles of the bike.

Buzzraw X | Front and Rear Suspension in action!

Firstly, a URT design inherently eliminates any interference between the way the rear suspension moves and the behaviour of the chain or belt of the drivetrain. For the more technically keen amongst you, it means elimination of chain growth through the arc of travel of the URT. The main benefit of this is eliminating any odd sensations or ghost movements to the pedal feel while going over rough terrain with the rear end actively moving up and down. On that note, having a zero growth drivetrain also keeps all drivetrain options open and less confusing for our customers; and as with all our Buzzraw models, you can still have your pick of pedal, hub drive or mid drive.

Another benefit of having an interference-free drivetrain is that all power that is put through the crank, whether pedal or mid drive, goes straight to the rear wheel via the chain or belt cleanly, and is not lost somewhere along the way through secondary movements within the frame geometry - something that would happen if another suspension linkage design was adopted. The upshot? This independent behaviour between suspension and drivetrain keeps the Buzzraw X a highly efficient platform to power.

Then let’s take a look at maintenance. The Buzzraw was always designed with an easy-to-maintain ethos in mind as we foresee Buzzraws to be knocking about for decades to come, and a rear design with fewer linkages and bearings can only be a good thing in the long run, which is what our URT design is.

With all the criteria set in place and honed, what did we actually achieve with the Buzzraw X? Well, for starters, we found the geometry to work as we envisioned, taking the rough edge off, not just cobbled streets, but the rough edge off everything! And a knock on effect of this new found refinement is that it also offers fantastic high speed stability, and taking the Buzzraw X to above normal speeds to still be a particularly reassuring and stress free experience- wonderful for you and anything that might be along for the ride, cup of coffee included!
