The DNA of Coast Cycles

The Legacy of Coast Cycles.

Author: Coast Cycles / People / Published: Feb-28-2021

A quick journey through the last 7 years of dreaming and making the machines that matter to us.

Jansen Tan started Coast Cycles as a consequence from his lifelong involvement with bicycles in competition. Elements of motorsport and general tinkering with mechanical things have also come together to feature as a broad and comprehensive backdrop to his career as an industrial designer.

As a rider and an enthusiast, Jansen always felt that there were still interesting opportunities in the cycling market. It was clear that the industry was very well established and defined by products that were close to 100% function driven in their respective categories; highly efficient road bikes, hugely capable mountain bikes and even the ubiquitous compact folding bikes that addressed last mile transport neatly.

But what about explicitly prioritising fun and the other positive parts of the human experience that comes with the joy of getting on a bike and pedalling somewhere… or even nowhere? What about looking deeper at bicycles as accomplices in identify making in a world where occasionally, we do want to make our mark? And what about those who saw the bike as a pure tool of the commute; was there an opportunity to evolve that relationship from pure utility to a more emotionally engaging one?

Everybody Needs Some Time To Coast!

The Classic Makes its way to Europe to get a bit culture.

Coast Cycles was started as is a response to this. There was there a need to switch things up, break the mould, connect to a central idea from a few gut feelings. There was something in the idea of infusing more personality into bikes while focussing on making them easier and more utility driven from a lifestyle and quality-of-life perspective.

Coast Cycles has been designing, prototyping and refining bikes since 2014. The bikes we have always strove to create are not the result of a clinical process of customer focus groups, but are a moonshot through triangulating, aesthetics, real-world utility, and retrieving kid-like emotions of joy, want and escape.

What influences us? Maybe its the garishly fun and improbable cartoons of the 80s, maybe it’s the memorable toys that gave us eye-widening joy when they did something really cool at the flick of a switch, or, to the present day, the machines that we now love to drive, drift or pull out of a ditch. Maybe blame the fact Coast Cycles is essentially made up of designers and creatives who love to participate in and document sub-cultures, first and foremost?

Coastliner | Our classic urban bike

Goliath | The Big BMX

Juggernaut | The bold urban runabout

Buzzraw Classic | Fun, ground-breaking and category defining

The Classic was the ideal weapon to tackle urban Paris.

We will be honest and say that it hasn’t been a straight path for us here at Coast Cycles, and for many looking in from the outside, starting Coast Cycles did seem a fool’s errand; it took us a lot of tenacity, some luck, and we leaned heavy on those days where occasionally, everything all fell into focus; for it was only after noodling around for years with day-dreamt ideas from the Coastliner to the cheeky and impish Juggernaut and Goliath that growing experience and a degree of gung-ho eventually led us to deliver the Buzzraw; our award winning, iconic homage to 1960s Mini Bikes, scaled for utility and chunky in profile, yet elegant in proportion and seemingly something that generated an outsized emotional response-People love their Buzzraws. They love what it says about them, they love the capability and convenience it had brought into their lives, and most importantly, for some, it finally is the solution for them to rely less on more pollutive forms of transport.

We thank you for taking the time to read this; it means a lot to us. If there is anything that we have learned on this journey to date, is that the amazing support that we gotten informs us that the vision and DNA of Coast Cycles should go forth and we look forward to welcoming more of you to the Coast Cycles family!
